Competition as motivation

At the faculty of Foreign Languages of Karakalpak State University there has been a hot competition between two groups of sophomore students (206 and 207) on the subject Vocabulary. It involved 4 steps including themes on weather, relationship, describing people’s appearance as well as personality and everyday minor problems. At the beginning of the competition, group members came to the blackboard to define the words written in stickers. During the definition step, students came one by one and answered them. Those who could find out and answer quickly got scores in this activity.

In the second step, students were given to make up dialogues on the theme Relationship. Working as a team, students prepared their dialogues in a group and showed their role-plays. To be more specific, dialogues were intended to include a conversation among business partners and a quarrel among groupmates. Active students took scores during this activity.

Before starting the next step, there was a break including a song sung by two students in order to show their talent and this motivated participants to enjoy the competition and increased their mood. In the third step, students had to describe main heroes of two films: Titanic and Harry Potter. The students described both appearance and personality of actors and actresses shown in the presentation in turn. Both groups took part in this step actively and their scores were equal.

In the fourth step, there were questions in the presentation involving situations of everyday minor problems. Students raised their hands and answered the questions one by one. In the end, active participants were awarded with certificates for further achievement, which gave motivation for learners. Thus, it would be beneficial if there were more competitions held among groups to increase students’ motivation.
