On February 22, 2023, professors, doctoral students and members of the Students’ Ornithological Club “Otus” of Berdakh Karakalpak State University organized an expedition to Lake Ashykul, located on the outskirts of the city of Nukus.  Twenty-six people participated in the expedition.

The main goal of the expedition was to conduct an international winter census and observation of waterfowl. During the observation period, 379 individuals belonging to 16 species of birds were recorded on Lake Ashykul. Among them numerous were Red-Nosed Pochard Netta rufina, Mallard Anas platyrhynchos, Common Pochard Aythya ferina and other waterfowl.
